Welsh Fire Men’s Team Victorious in Season Opener
The Welsh Fire men’s team commenced their 2026 Hundred season with a six-wicket victory over Southern Brave in Southampton. Captain Phil Salt played a crucial role, scoring an unbeaten 47 runs from 37 balls to guide his team to a win while chasing a target of 136 runs. The match saw the Fire reach 138-4 from 98 balls, surpassing the Brave’s total of 135-7 from 100 balls.
Salt, who is the all-time leading scorer in The Hundred with 1,138 runs across five seasons with his former team Manchester Originals, has joined the Fire as captain for this year’s competition. His objective is to lead the Welsh franchise to their first-ever title, following a season where both their men’s and women’s teams finished at the bottom of their respective tables.
During the chase, Salt initially supported fellow opener Matt Short, who contributed a quick 20 runs. Salt then formed partnerships with Joe Root, who scored 14 runs, and Rachin Ravindra, who added 24 runs. The match concluded dramatically when Asa Tribe hit a boundary off Chris Jordan’s first ball with nine runs needed from five, and Salt secured the victory with a six two balls later.
Southern Brave Women’s Team Claims Victory
In an earlier match, the Southern Brave women’s team, led by captain Sophie Molineux, achieved an eight-run victory against Welsh Fire. Molineux, an Australian T20 World Cup-winning captain, was named player of the match in her debut as Brave captain. The Brave, who were tournament winners in 2023 and semi-finalists last year, successfully defended their score of 126 runs.
The Fire women’s team was in a strong position, reaching 1-80 from 58 balls while chasing the Brave’s total. However, a direct hit from Jemimah Rodrigues led to the run-out of Freya Kemp for 39 runs, providing an opening for the Brave. Wickets then fell rapidly for the Fire. Georgia Voll was dismissed after scoring 52 runs.
Molineux was instrumental with the ball, taking 3-14 from 20 balls. Lauren Bell and Tilly Corteen-Coleman also contributed significantly, each taking two wickets, ensuring the Fire were restricted to 8-118. For the Brave, Laura Wolvaardt scored an unbeaten 45 runs from 36 balls, and Lizelle Lee added 31 runs. Molineux herself contributed 22 runs with the bat before being stumped. Despite Heather Graham’s four-wicket haul for the Fire, it was not enough to secure a win for her team.
Molineux expressed satisfaction with the win, highlighting the team’s ability to recover and the depth of their bowling attack. She noted that the team bowled well in the middle overs, and Lauren Bell performed strongly at the end of the innings. The Brave had built their total around the contributions of Wolvaardt and Lee.
Men’s Match Highlights and Player Performances
In the men’s game, the Southern Brave innings saw openers Jamie Smith and Ben McKinney dismissed for single figures. Thomas Rew, an 18-year-old, helped rebuild the innings with a rapid 41 runs from 30 balls. David Miller, after a slow start, finished strongly with 44 runs from 35 balls before being dismissed on the penultimate delivery, contributing to the Brave’s total of 135-7.
The Welsh Fire bowlers maintained control for much of the innings. Marco Jansen was particularly effective, finishing with figures of 2-17. Matt Short also bowled economically, taking 1-5 from 10 balls. Despite the efforts of Jofra Archer (0-22) and Adil Rashid (0-18) for the Brave, their combined 40 balls yielded only 40 runs, but the overall total proved insufficient. Nikhil Chaudhary picked up 2-19 from 15 balls for the Brave and also contributed 19 runs from 12 balls with the bat.
Looking ahead, London Spirit will face Manchester Super Giants at Lord’s on Thursday. The women’s game is scheduled to begin at 14:45 BST, followed by the men’s game at 18:30 BST.
