Post-match confrontation under investigation
Spain midfielder Gavi has stated his belief that Argentina’s Leandro Paredes should not face suspension for his involvement in the confrontation that occurred after the World Cup final. The incident took place as Spain celebrated their 1-0 victory over Argentina.
The post-match events are currently under investigation by FIFA, which has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to assess the situation. This investigation could potentially lead to suspensions for any players or coaches involved, and the Argentine Football Association might also face a fine.
During the confrontation, Paredes appeared to grab Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat. Gavi, who was an unused substitute in the match, attempted to intervene but was pushed to the ground by Thiago Almada, another Argentine player. Paredes was also seen pushing the Barcelona midfielder to the turf by placing his hand on Gavi’s face.
Other Argentine players, including Nahuel Molina, were also involved. Molina reportedly swung a punch towards Spain captain Rodri, who then confronted him. Veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi was also observed engaging Rodri in a heated verbal exchange as tensions escalated on the pitch. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni and several players eventually stepped in to separate those involved and restore order.
Despite the chaotic scenes, Gavi expressed his view on the potential suspension of Paredes. Speaking to El Partidazo de COPE, Gavi said, “I don’t think [Paredes] should be suspended.” He acknowledged that the image might not be ideal for children but suggested that such physicality is part of football. Gavi added that the most logical action would have been to send Paredes off during the match itself.
Paredes breaks silence without apology
Leandro Paredes has issued a public statement following the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, but his message did not include an apology for his role in the post-match fracas. His statement, shared on Instagram, focused on thanking supporters and praising his teammates for their efforts throughout the tournament.
In his post, Paredes wrote, “Thank you, Argentina! I love you today and always. Today, I write with a heavy heart, having been unable to bring our country the joy it so richly deserves. But with a chest full of pride for having given everything we had and for flying our flag at the very top once again!” He also commended his teammates, stating, “Thank you to everyone who was part of this national team. To this group of players who gave their all to represent this jersey, fighting for it until the very last second of every match! It was an honour to be part of the best Argentine national team in history.” The post, however, made no direct reference to the altercation.
FIFA confirmed that it has initiated disciplinary proceedings into the incidents that occurred after the final whistle. An official statement from FIFA indicated that a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor has been appointed to investigate potential breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code regarding the post-match events, following an assessment of relevant match reports.
Earlier reports had suggested that Paredes received a red card after the match. However, this dismissal was later removed from the official record, meaning he did not face immediate punishment on the night of the final. Enzo Fernandez of Argentina was dismissed during the final, receiving a second yellow card in second-half added time.
The controversy extended beyond the on-field confrontation. Argentina’s players also drew criticism for turning their backs to the pitch and facing their own supporters as Spain collected the World Cup trophy. This act was widely interpreted as disrespectful towards the newly crowned champions.
As FIFA’s investigation proceeds, Paredes’ decision to focus solely on Argentina’s campaign in his public statement, without addressing the violence that overshadowed the final, has intensified scrutiny over his conduct.
