FIFA has announced its official Dream XI for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a selection determined by a global fan vote. The team features standout players from the tournament held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While Spain, France, and Argentina, all semi-finalists, dominate the selections, England, which finished third, has one representative.
Jude Bellingham is the sole England player included in FIFA’s Dream XI. His selection follows an impressive tournament performance, where he scored seven goals, marking the highest tally ever for an England player in a single FIFA World Cup. This contribution helped England achieve their best finish since 1966. Other notable England performers, such as Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, were not voted into the final XI.
Dominant Nations and Key Players
Spain, the tournament champions, have three players in the Dream XI. Rodri, who captained Spain to their second World Cup title and won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, anchors the midfield. He is joined by full-backs Marc Cucurella and Pedro Porro. Spain completed an unbeaten tournament, culminating in a victory over Argentina in the final.
France, despite finishing fourth, also contributes three players to the Dream XI. Kylian Mbappé, the Golden Boot winner with 10 goals, occupies the right side of the attack. He became the first player to win the World Cup Golden Boot twice and surpassed Lionel Messi’s all-time World Cup scoring record with 22 career goals. Michael Olise, who recorded seven assists, the most in a single FIFA World Cup, takes a midfield spot. Dayot Upamecano completes France’s contingent in central defence.
Argentina, the beaten finalists, have two players in the XI. Lionel Messi, who finished the tournament with eight goals and four assists, is featured on the left wing. Defender Lisandro Martínez partners Upamecano in the central defence. Completing the front three is Norway striker Erling Haaland, who scored seven goals and helped his country reach their first-ever quarter-final appearance in his World Cup debut.
Surprise Goalkeeper Selection
The goalkeeper selection for the Dream XI presented a surprise, with fans voting for Cape Verde veteran Vozinha. This choice came despite Unai Simón winning the Golden Glove, and other prominent goalkeepers like England’s Jordan Pickford and France’s Mike Maignan being contenders.
The 40-year-old Vozinha emerged as a notable figure during Cape Verde’s run to the Round of 32, where they were narrowly defeated by eventual finalists Argentina. He kept clean sheets against Spain and Saudi Arabia, made 18 saves throughout the tournament, and outperformed his expected goals against figure by 0.9. His performances also garnered significant attention on social media, with his Instagram followers reportedly surging from approximately 50,000 at the start of the tournament to 29.5 million by its conclusion.
Individual Honours
The Dream XI announcement follows the conclusion of individual honours for the tournament. Rodri received the Golden Ball as the competition’s best player, with Messi and Mbappé earning the Silver Ball and Bronze Ball, respectively. Mbappé was the Golden Boot winner with 10 goals, while Messi finished with eight goals and four assists. Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón was awarded the Golden Glove after conceding only one goal in eight matches. Additionally, teenage defender Pau Cubarsí collected the FIFA Young Player Award, and the Netherlands received the FIFA Fair Play Award.
