Sinner: Wimbledon win means so much after ‘sacrificing everything’ - ATP Tour

Sinner’s Dominance on Centre Court

Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Wimbledon men’s singles title, securing a victory over French Open champion Alexander Zverev in a four-set final. The world number one recovered after losing the first set, eventually overcoming Zverev with a score of 6-7 (7/9), 7-6 (7/2), 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday. This win marks Sinner’s first Grand Slam title since his triumph at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club 12 months prior.

The match, largely dominated by powerful serves, saw Sinner demonstrate remarkable perseverance. He recorded 58 winners against only 25 unforced errors over three hours and 46 minutes on Centre Court. His performance was particularly notable against an in-form Zverev, who entered the final with a 13-match winning streak at the majors.

This victory brings Sinner’s total Grand Slam crowns to five, placing him two behind the majors tally of his rival Carlos Alcaraz, who is currently injured. The win also marked Sinner’s 100th match victory at tennis’s four biggest events. His strong form this year is reflected in his 44-3 win-loss record and his sixth title of the season.

Key Moments and Turning Points

The first set was a tight affair, with both players holding serve until a tie-break. Zverev saved the only break point of the set before clinching the tie-break with a forehand winner. This marked the first time in seven meetings that Zverev had taken a set off Sinner.

The second set mirrored the first in its service dominance, with no break points for either player. However, Sinner elevated his game in the tie-break to level the match. The turning point arrived in the third set when Zverev created his first break point. During this crucial moment, Zverev slipped after Sinner executed a drop-shot winner, clutching his knee. Sinner crossed the net to check on his opponent, a moment that drew the crowd’s attention.

Following this incident, Sinner capitalised, breaking Zverev’s serve in the subsequent game. Zverev reacted by throwing his racket in frustration after sending a forehand long on a break point, during which Sinner had been on the turf earlier in the rally. The top seed then served out the set flawlessly, securing a two-sets-to-one lead with an ace.

Sinner’s Path to Victory

Despite Zverev’s efforts to extend the contest, Sinner broke his serve for a 4-3 advantage in the fourth set, effectively sealing the match. The final game saw some of the match’s most dramatic rallies before Sinner secured the title on his first match point with a forehand winner, falling to the turf in celebration.

This triumph helps Sinner move past the memory of his unexpected second-round exit from the French Open last month, where he lost a two-set lead. His journey through Wimbledon this year was not without its challenges, as he had to come from behind in a five-set match against Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round. However, he has since established himself as a formidable presence on grass courts.

Zverev, who had never advanced past the fourth round at Wimbledon in nine previous attempts, had experienced a resurgence in London after his French Open victory. He will now climb above Alcaraz to second in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings on Monday. Despite his strong performance, Zverev was unable to break his 10-match losing streak against Sinner.

This win marks Sinner’s fifth Grand Slam title, further solidifying his position in men’s tennis.
