India dominates England in Lord’s Test
England is facing a significant defeat in the one-off women’s Test against India at Lord’s. After India declared at 341-7, setting a target of 457, England finished the third day at 130-6, still needing 327 runs for victory.
The day saw the final innings for two key England batters, Tammy Beaumont and Heather Knight. Beaumont was bowled for a golden duck, while Knight fell for 13. Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt also departed cheaply, bowled for 11, contributing to England’s struggle at 59-5.
Mady Villiers and Amy Jones provided some resistance with a 67-run sixth-wicket partnership. However, Villiers’ innings ended with a catch by Richa Ghosh shortly before the close of play. Jones remained unbeaten on 52.
Bhatia’s century strengthens India’s position
India’s commanding lead was largely built on the performance of Yastika Bhatia, who scored a majestic 113, becoming the first female Test centurion at Lord’s. She outshone her overnight partner, Smriti Mandhana, who was dismissed for 70 by Lauren Bell.

Bhatia capitalised on England’s bowling, reaching her first international hundred. Ghosh’s counter-attacking fifty further extended India’s advantage before Harmanpreet Kaur declared.
Sophie Ecclestone achieved a notable milestone, finishing with figures of 5-118, making her the first Englishwoman to be on the Lord’s Test honours board. However, this was a rare highlight for England on a day dominated by India.
Farewell for Knight and Beaumont
The match marked a significant occasion for Beaumont and Knight, both of whom are retiring from international cricket. Beaumont received a standing ovation from the crowd despite her golden duck, a dismissal caused by a delivery from Kranti Gaud. This led to an unusual guard of honour for her departure.
Knight also received a guard of honour after being dismissed by Gaud, who has taken seven wickets in the match. Her career includes leading England in 199 matches and captaining the side to the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title. She also became the first England player to score a century in all three international formats.
Knight’s career highlights include a 157 against Australia in 2013, which helped secure a draw and an Ashes triumph. Her Test career-best was an unbeaten 168 against Australia in 2022, where she anchored a 100-run ninth-wicket stand with Sophie Ecclestone. In One Day Internationals, she scored 106 against Pakistan in the 2017 World Cup. In Twenty20 Internationals, she made 108 not out against Thailand in the 2020 T20 World Cup.
The match at Lord’s concludes Knight’s international career, which spans 320 caps and 8,017 international runs. She expressed gratitude for her journey as an England cricketer, acknowledging the difficulty of leaving the team environment that has been a constant for 16 years.
England’s struggles in adapting to the conditions, particularly after Sciver-Brunt’s decision to bowl first, have been evident. While Bell showed consistency, the support from the rest of the seam attack, including Issy Wong and Lauren Filer, has raised questions about the team’s fast bowling depth. The final day of the Test will see England attempt to avoid a heavy defeat against India.
