Rohit Sharma, the former India captain, has addressed recent speculation regarding his future in One Day Internationals (ODIs), stating his focus remains on contributing to the team’s success. His comments followed a strong performance where he scored 138 runs off 110 balls in the third ODI against England at Lord’s.
Despite his century, India lost the match by 27 runs as they chased England’s total of 387/3. The veteran opener’s innings included 17 fours and five sixes, keeping India in contention until the final stages of the game.
Speaking after the match, Rohit Sharma indicated that external discussions do not affect his approach to the game. He emphasised his role as a player representing his country and team, a responsibility he has held since his debut. He acknowledged that speculation has been present throughout his career and is likely to continue, but he prioritises his performance on the field.
Rumours about Rohit Sharma’s potential retirement from ODIs had intensified before the Lord’s match. Some reports suggested that chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir had informed him he was not part of the roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, these reports were quickly dismissed by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
Mentor backs Rohit’s longevity
Lalchand Rajput, Rohit Sharma’s early mentor, has expressed confidence in his ability to continue playing for at least two more years. Rajput, who first observed Rohit as a young talent at the National Cricket Academy, stated that he does not believe in the ongoing speculation.
Rajput attributes any recent struggles to the natural ‘wear and tear’ that comes from two decades of playing cricket. He highlighted Rohit’s improved fitness, noting that he appears leaner. Rajput believes that Rohit is just one strong innings away from regaining his peak form, citing his recent century as a glimpse of his capabilities.
The mentor, who also managed the Indian team during their victorious 2007 ICC T20 World Cup campaign, dismissed the idea of looking beyond Rohit Sharma at this stage. He suggested that Rohit, having put significant effort into his fitness, likely has a mindset to play until 2027. Rajput advised patience, stating that discussions about the future should wait until the appropriate time.
Rajput also pointed out a subtle evolution in Rohit Sharma’s batting philosophy. He explained that while Rohit previously aimed to set an aggressive tone early in his innings as captain, he now focuses on building innings and providing a solid foundation for the team. He still intends to attack poor deliveries but prioritises batting for longer periods.
BCCI clarifies position
Amidst the widespread speculation, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia explicitly denied reports that the Lord’s ODI would mark Rohit Sharma’s final appearance for India. Saikia firmly asserted that there had been no discussions indicating such an outcome.
Saikia further clarified that Rohit Sharma remains a regular member of the Indian ODI team and will continue to represent the country as long as he is considered part of their plans. This statement aimed to dispel any uncertainty surrounding the opener’s position within the national squad.
Before the Lord’s match, social media was rife with rumours suggesting it could be Rohit’s last ODI in Indian colours. However, his performance in the match served as a reminder of his class, as he kept India in the chase until the closing stages. Rohit Sharma is currently 12 matches away from reaching 300 appearances in ODIs. He has played 288 ODIs, accumulating 11895 runs at an average of 48.95, including 38 centuries and 62 fifties.
Lalchand Rajput also emphasised the continued importance of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to the Indian team. He views them as indispensable not only for their scoring ability but also for the confidence and aura they bring. Rajput noted that opponents respect and fear the duo, and their presence instils a different level of confidence within the team. He believes younger players can learn significantly from their sustained success at the highest level, which requires immense mental strength and physical fitness.
