India secured a seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the opening T20I in Harare, ending a challenging period for the team. The win marked a significant moment for captain Shreyas Iyer, who registered his first victory as India’s T20I captain after a series of losses.
The match saw a record-breaking performance from 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who became the youngest batter in men’s international cricket to score a fifty. His explosive innings was crucial in India’s successful chase of 126 runs.
Sooryavanshi’s Record-Breaking Performance
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, at 15 years and 118 days, delivered a breathtaking match-winning knock, scoring 50 runs off just 19 balls. He reached his maiden international half-century in only 18 deliveries, breaking the previous record held by Nepal’s Kushal Malla. This achievement also surpassed the record set by Gibraltar’s Louis Bruce, who scored a T20I fifty at 16 years and 56 days in 2021.
His innings began quietly during India’s tour of England earlier this month, where he had scores of 14, 13, and 15, leading to him being dropped for the final T20I. However, his return to the Harare Sports Club, where he had previously scored 175 off 80 balls in the Under-19 World Cup final, proved to be the ideal setting for his comeback.
After taking four deliveries to settle, Sooryavanshi launched a counterattack, hitting four boundaries and four sixes. His aggressive strokeplay dismantled Zimbabwe’s bowling attack, effectively ending the contest within the powerplay. He was eventually dismissed by Richard Ngarava one ball after reaching his half-century. Despite the early loss of Abhishek Sharma for one run, Sooryavanshi’s contribution of 48 runs helped India race to 52 for 1 in five overs.
India’s Dominant Bowling and Captain’s Milestone
Before Sooryavanshi’s batting heroics, India’s pace attack set the tone by restricting Zimbabwe to 125 for seven. Mayank Yadav made an immediate impact, dismissing Brian Bennett with the very first ball of the match and finishing with two wickets. Prince Yadav also contributed with two scalps, as Zimbabwe struggled to 20 for three and then 32 for four with the dismissal of captain Sikandar Raza.
Zimbabwe never recovered from these early setbacks, failing to post a challenging total against an Indian side eager to bounce back from recent T20I series losses to Ireland and England. Mayank Yadav finished with figures of 2 for 18, while Prince Yadav claimed 2 for 19.
The victory was particularly significant for Shreyas Iyer, who celebrated his maiden win as India’s T20I captain. He had previously lost all seven matches during tours of Ireland and England. Iyer praised his bowlers and batters for their execution, stating, “Exceptional. They were tremendous in their execution. Can’t be more happier to get my first win.”
Following Sooryavanshi’s dismissal, Ishan Kishan contributed 35 runs, and captain Iyer remained unbeaten with 28 runs, completing the chase with ease. India successfully chased down the target of 126 in just 13.2 overs.
Iyer also explained his decision to bowl first after winning the toss, noting, “I was anticipating the bounce and there was a decent amount of bounce. Exceptional start given by Mayank. Didn’t give them room.” The match also saw Ashok Sharma make his international debut, and India named concussion substitutes for specific roles for the first time, including Suryansh Shedge, Prabhsimran Singh, Harsh Dubey, and Yash Thakur.
