Belfast: Ireland secures historic T20 victory over world champions India at Stormont

Ireland vs India: Irish stun world champions in T20 opener at Stormont

Ireland’s Historic Triumph

Ireland achieved a significant milestone by securing their first senior international victory against India, the reigning world champions, in the opening T20 International at Stormont in Belfast. The hosts clinched a 34-run win, breaking a long-standing winless streak against India in the shorter format, marking their ninth attempt in T20s and twelfth across all formats.

The match saw debutants Jai Moondra and Matthew Hollard deliver standout performances, particularly notable given that several key bowlers were absent due to injury. Over 4,000 spectators gathered at Stormont for the fixture.

India, after winning the toss, chose to field first. Ireland’s new captain, Lorcan Tucker, led the batting effort, contributing a half-century that helped his team post a total of 182-9.

In response, India started strongly with Abhishek Sharma scoring 50 runs off 20 balls. However, Ireland’s bowlers maintained composure, with Hollard taking 3-28 and Moondra, who was born in India, securing 2-26. Their efforts were crucial in dismissing India for 148 runs with seven balls remaining, sealing a memorable victory.

Hollard expressed his excitement about his debut, stating it was a dream come true to play against India. He also mentioned his family traveled from Johannesburg to support him and highlighted the support he received from Cricket Ireland since his move.

Key Performances and Strategic Bowling

Despite expectations that India, fresh from retaining their T20 World Cup crown, would dominate an Ireland team missing key players like Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, and Josh Little, Ireland demonstrated resilience. After being asked to bat, Ireland recovered effectively, largely due to Tucker’s half-century.

The Indian openers, Sanju Samson and Sharma, began aggressively, scoring 16 runs in the first over. However, Moondra made an immediate impact by dismissing Samson with his very first delivery in international cricket. Ireland’s bowling coach, Ryan Eagleson, praised Moondra’s performance, noting his pace, left-arm option, and strategic intelligence in varying his deliveries.

After Sharma’s dismissal by Liam McCarthy, India’s middle order struggled. Hollard was instrumental during this period, claiming the wickets of Ishan Kishan, captain Shreyas Iyer, and Washington Sundar.

Ireland’s debutant fast bowlers were particularly impressive. Hollard, from Balbriggan, was named player of the match for his figures of 3-28. Moondra, representing Leinster CC, contributed two wickets against his birth country. Both bowlers displayed astute tactics, forcing India’s batters to target the larger square boundaries, and Ireland’s fielders held most of their catches in the deep.

The pace of Ireland’s bowlers was a notable feature, with Moondra clocked at 88mph and Hollard around 85mph. Moondra quickly made his mark by bowling Samson with his first ball, while Hollard took only two balls to get Kishan to sky a chance. Moondra further shifted the momentum in Ireland’s favor in the 16th over, beating Axar Patel with pace and then inducing a return catch from Shivam Dube with a slower ball.

As India required 49 runs from the final four overs, Ireland’s spinners, Gareth Delany and Matthew Humphreys, effectively closed out the innings. The victory was sealed when Tim Tector caught Arshdeep Singh’s hit off a Humphreys delivery, securing the spinner’s third wicket and igniting celebrations among the Irish team.

The Ireland squad for the series included Lorcan Tucker (captain), Ross Adair, Ben Calitz, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Stephen Doheny, Matthew Humphreys, Gavin Hoey, Matthew Hollard, Liam McCarthy, Jai Moondra, Harry Tector, Tim Tector, and Reuben Wilson. The next match between the two sides is scheduled for Sunday at Stormont at 13:30 BST.

Captaincy and Squad Dynamics

Lorcan Tucker was recently confirmed as the new permanent T20 International captain for Ireland, leading a new-look squad into the two-match series against India Men. Tucker has accumulated 159 caps for Ireland across all formats since his debut in 2016. He also captains his Inter-Provincial side, Leinster Lightning, and has previously filled in as Ireland Men’s captain on two occasions.

Speaking about his new role, Tucker described it as a great privilege and a responsibility to represent the playing group and the organization effectively. He expressed admiration for previous Ireland captains and pride in joining their ranks. His approach to captaincy involves leading by example and fostering strong relationships with staff and players, aiming to bring out their best.

Tucker’s primary goal for the next cycle, leading up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028, is to integrate the next generation of international cricketers into the system. He highlighted the importance of giving young players opportunities to create their own memorable moments in the sport.

Balancing his captaincy with his roles as a wicket-keeper and top-order batter presents challenges, especially with the time constraints in modern cricket. However, Tucker emphasized the importance of thorough preparation to ensure he can play freely and make decisive actions during matches.

Regarding the series against India, Tucker acknowledged India’s strength in T20 cricket, viewing the series as a crucial test at the beginning of Ireland’s new cycle. He hoped Ireland could disrupt India’s plans and demonstrate their own impact on the international scene.

The squad selection for the series was impacted by injuries to six players, including Josh Little, Mark Adair, Paul Stirling, Curtis Campher, Barry McCarthy, and Jordan Neill. These absences created opportunities for new players, with Matthew Hollard and Jai Moondra receiving their first call-ups to the senior Ireland Men’s squad. Reuben Wilson, uncapped in T20I cricket, also joined the squad after making his Test debut the previous month.

National Men’s Selector Andrew White noted that while injuries were a challenge, they provided opportunities for other players. He specifically mentioned Moondra’s ability as a left-arm bowler to swing the ball at a decent pace, Wilson’s talent displayed in the Under-19s and Test cricket, and Hollard’s raw talent for T20 cricket. The second T20I match is scheduled for June 28, 2026, at Stormont.
