Scotland’s World Cup hopes hang on other results after Brazil defeat

World Cup 2026 today: Live updates, latest news as it happened - June 25

Scotland’s progression to the World Cup last 32 is now dependent on results from other matches, following their 3-0 defeat by Brazil in their final group-stage game. The team will need to wait until Sunday to determine if they can advance as one of the eight best third-placed sides.

The loss to Brazil in Miami significantly impacted Scotland’s goal difference, which now stands at -3. This makes their path to the knockout stages more challenging, as teams with three points and a -3 goal difference have a 42% chance of making the last 32, according to Opta. This percentage increases for better goal differences, with -2 offering a 63% chance and -1 an 84% chance.

Scotland’s qualification scenarios

To qualify as a third-placed team, Scotland needs at least four of the 12 third-placed teams to finish with fewer points or a worse goal difference. Currently, four third-placed teams are ranked below Scotland, and five have the same number of points, with four of those five still having a game to play. Recent results, including South Africa’s win over South Korea and Ecuador’s victory against Germany, have further complicated Scotland’s position.

Scotland requires specific outcomes from eight remaining group-stage matches. These include:

  • Sweden losing to Japan by four or more goals in Group F.
  • In Group D, where Paraguay and Australia both have three points, Scotland needs Paraguay to lose by two or more goals, or Australia to be beaten by at least four goals. A draw between them would send both through.
  • A draw between Senegal and Iraq in Group I, or Iraq winning by no more than two goals.
  • Uruguay losing to Spain in Group H.
  • Iran losing to Egypt in Group G.
  • Croatia losing to Ghana by at least three goals in Group L.
  • A draw between DR Congo and Uzbekistan in Group K, or Uzbekistan winning by no more than three goals.
  • In Group J, similar to Group D, Austria and Algeria both have three points. Scotland needs Algeria to lose by two or more goals, or Austria to be beaten by at least four goals.

Match details against Brazil

Brazil’s victory was sparked by Vinícius Júnior, who opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Scott McKenna, in central defence, misplayed the ball, leading to a deflection off Rayan, which Vinícius then converted past Angus Gunn. Vinícius Júnior later added a second goal just before halftime, heading in a cross from Bruno Guimarães after defensive lapses from Nathan Patterson and Gunn.

Brazil’s third goal came from Matheus Cunha, assisted by Guimarães, who showcased impressive footwork to set up his teammate. Despite the scoreline, Scotland did not concede further goals, with Lawrence Shankland’s attempt finding the roof of the net and another Scott McTominay header drawing a save from Alisson. Neymar also entered the game for Brazil with 14 minutes remaining, ending an international absence.

The outcome leaves Steve Clarke’s team in a precarious position, relying on other results to extend their tournament journey.

Scotland’s fate will be decided by the results of the remaining group-stage matches.
