വെളിച്ചെണ്ണ: Coconut Oil Prices Plummet Amidst Southern Kerala’s Market Manipulation

വെളിച്ചെണ്ണ — IN news

In a troubling twist for consumers in southern Kerala, coconut prices have plummeted by nearly 40%, yet middlemen are exploiting this drop by selling coconuts at inflated rates. The price of green coconuts has fallen from 78 rupees per kilogram to just 42 rupees, while dried coconut now costs 52 rupees per kilogram.

Farmers find themselves in a severe financial crisis as the price of copra has decreased from 200 rupees to 150 rupees per kilogram. Meanwhile, coconut oil prices have also taken a hit, dropping from over 500 rupees per liter to around 260 rupees. Despite these reductions, the situation remains grim for many.

Middlemen are reportedly capitalizing on the price differences between northern and southern Kerala. In the northern districts, green coconuts sell for about 40-42 rupees per kilogram. In stark contrast, consumers in the south face prices ranging from 65 to 70 rupees. This disparity is raising alarms among local farmers and consumer advocates alike.

The government is being urged to intervene to stabilize prices and support farmers who were previously enjoying a ‘golden period’ before this sudden downturn. The increased production of coconuts in Tamil Nadu has contributed significantly to this price drop in Kerala.

Additionally, export disruptions to the Gulf due to regional conflicts have further complicated the coconut market landscape. The current heatwave has led to a sudden increase in coconut supply, but it appears that middlemen have seized this opportunity for profit rather than passing savings onto consumers.

As the situation unfolds, observers remain concerned about the long-term implications for both farmers and consumers. With calls for government action growing louder, it remains uncertain how quickly relief will come for those affected by these market manipulations.
