Rodri faces decision amid Barcelona and Real Madrid interest

Barcelona? Real Madrid? Man City's Rodri has a decision to make

Manchester City midfielder Rodri could be facing a significant decision regarding his future, with interest from La Liga clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona. The 30-year-old is in the final year of his contract with City and has not yet agreed to new terms.

Real Madrid has reportedly maintained a long-standing interest in Rodri. Recent reports indicate that Barcelona has also entered the pursuit for the player’s signature. However, sources close to Barcelona have reportedly distanced themselves from these discussions.

Rodri’s potential move back to his home country is a notable prospect. He previously expressed a desire to return to Spain and play in La Liga during his career. While he also acknowledged the appeal of representing Real Madrid, a move to Barcelona would see him join the reigning La Liga champions for the past two seasons.

At Barcelona, Rodri could reunite with several Spanish national team members, including Ferran Torres, Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, and Pedri. The club’s playing style is also understood to be a factor that appeals to Rodri, aligning with the tactical approach of Hansi Flick‘s squad.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, could offer Rodri a reunion with former City teammate Bernardo Silva, who joined Real this summer. Jose Mourinho is also set to return to lead the club. Real Madrid has been working on a deal for Rodri, with personal terms not expected to be an issue, though negotiations with Manchester City regarding a transfer fee are still pending.

Impact of Potential Departure

Rodri has been a crucial player for Manchester City since joining in 2019. He has contributed to four Premier League titles, the Champions League, and two FA Cups. His absence would be a significant blow to City, especially after the departure of Bernardo Silva this summer.

During the 2024-25 season, Rodri missed time due to a serious knee injury, and a hamstring issue affected parts of the previous season. Despite this, he was named player of the tournament at the World Cup, where he captained Spain to their second title. He was also the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner.

Rodri is currently recovering from back surgery and has not yet joined his teammates on their pre-season tour in the Far East. Manchester City sources have previously indicated they are relying on the player for the upcoming season, and any sale would require a substantial fee.

Barcelona’s Financial Considerations

Barcelona is exploring a deal for Rodri, partly due to midfielder Frenkie de Jong‘s expected lengthy absence after tearing a ligament in his right knee. De Jong’s recovery could take several months, potentially requiring surgery.

To facilitate a move for Rodri, Barcelona would likely need to sell players to create financial flexibility. The club’s financial position is expected to improve with their return to Camp Nou and the departure of players like Robert Lewandowski, which could assist in player registrations.

However, the ongoing redevelopment of Camp Nou will require the club to temporarily relocate next summer, impacting matchday revenues. Barcelona also plans to increase its loan to fund the stadium rebuild, which will affect their budget for the 2027-2028 season and their salary limit.

Rodri has made 298 appearances for Manchester City, scoring 28 goals and providing 32 assists during his seven years at the club.
