R Smaran, a left-handed batter from Bengaluru, has established himself as a prominent young talent in Indian domestic cricket. While switching from red-ball to white-ball is comparatively easier due to increased scoring options, moving back to red-ball requires patience and discipline in leaving deliveries.
For Smaran, adapting to different formats is more about mindset than technique. He notes that the red ball swings for longer, demanding greater patience and the ability to build long innings. In T20 cricket, he is working on expanding his range of shots to make bowlers uncomfortable and contribute to high-scoring games, aiming to increase his strike rate.
He also focuses on improving his technique against spin, particularly the sweep and reverse sweep, to unsettle bowlers on turning tracks. This is an important aspect of his game as he moves up the levels, especially in the subcontinent where pitches often assist spin.
Duleep Trophy and IPL Experiences
The Duleep Trophy, set to begin at the BCCI’s CoE in Bengaluru, is viewed by Smaran as an important launchpad for national team contention. He is part of the South Zone team for the second consecutive year, and despite playing directly in the semifinals without knowing the opposition, he feels his prior experience on the ground will aid his preparation.
His experience in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), though not yielding the best on-field returns in his first full season, was a significant learning curve. He scored 19 runs across six matches. He highlighted the value of sharing a dressing room with international players like Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, and Travis Head, learning from their preparation and approach to the game. He views his IPL journey as a learning experience, identifying areas for improvement to be better prepared for the next season.
Smaran also expressed his readiness for leadership roles, having captained Karnataka at the age-group level to a CK Nayudu Trophy win and being part of the Maharaja Trophy-winning side. He aims to guide Karnataka to a different result in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season after falling short in the previous final.
