Neymar, the Brazilian football star, engaged in a social media exchange with German economist Joachim Klement following Brazil’s 2-1 comeback victory against Japan in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32. Klement’s statistical model had predicted Japan would eliminate Brazil at this stage of the tournament.
Despite not playing in the match, Neymar took to X to address Klement directly. His post, which roughly translates to, “Mr Joachim Klement… please try again at the next World Cup,” garnered significant attention. This interaction occurred after Gabriel Martinelli scored the decisive 95th-minute winner for Brazil, securing their progression to the Round of 16.
Ancelotti’s Strategic Decision
Brazil’s head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, provided insight into his decision to keep Neymar off the pitch during the match against Japan. Ancelotti explained that he had initially planned to introduce Neymar in the second half. However, as the scores remained level, he opted to preserve the star player for potential extra time.
Speaking to the host broadcaster after the dramatic 2-1 win, Ancelotti elaborated on his substitution strategy. He stated, “I talked to Ney (Neymar), if we don’t draw, he’d come on at 60 minutes. Since we drew, I was preserving him for the 30 minutes of extra time.” This strategic move meant Neymar did not feature in the game, even though he was seen warming up on the sidelines.
The match itself was a high-tension affair, with Brazil mounting a thrilling second-half comeback. Gabriel Martinelli’s late goal in the 95th minute ensured Brazil’s hard-fought ticket to the next stage of the tournament. The victory took place in front of a packed stadium on a Monday.
Klement’s Prediction Model
Joachim Klement, the German economist and mathematician, is known for his statistical model that predicts outcomes in the World Cup. His model had accurately predicted the last three World Cup champions. For the 2026 World Cup, Klement’s forecast indicated Brazil’s elimination in the Round of 32, a prediction that Neymar evidently took note of.
The complex model developed by Joachim Klement integrates various factors to estimate the success probabilities of national teams. These factors include economic variables, demographic data, and sporting metrics. Among the main elements analysed are the GDP per capita of each country, which serves as an indicator of investment levels and sports infrastructure.
Additionally, Klement’s model considers the total population size, which can reflect the talent pool available to a nation. The cultural importance of football within a society and the current position of a team in the world rankings are also factored into the predictions. A crucial component of the model is an element of chance, designed to account for the inherent unpredictability of a tournament like the World Cup.
According to Klement, this final variable holds particular relevance for the 2026 edition of the tournament. The new format, which includes an additional round of direct knockout games, significantly increases the likelihood of an underdog team eliminating one of the favoured contenders in a single match. Despite the model’s previous successes, Brazil’s victory over Japan contradicted its prediction for this specific match.
Following their win, Brazil will advance to face either Ivory Coast or Norway in the Round of 16. This upcoming match is scheduled for July 5 at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
