Los Angeles 2028: ICC confirms cricket qualification pathway for Olympic return

ICC confirms qualification pathway for cricket's LA28 Olympic return

Qualification pathway for men’s and women’s cricket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have announced the qualification pathway for the men’s and women’s cricket competitions at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Cricket is set to return to the Olympics after a 128-year absence, with both men’s and women’s events featuring six teams each.

For the women’s competition, four teams have already secured their places. These include Australia from Oceania, Great Britain (represented by England) from Europe, India from Asia, and South Africa from Africa. Their qualification is based on their performances as the highest-placed eligible finishers from their respective continents in the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. The final standings of this tournament will determine India’s exact position.

Men’s qualification and host nation entry

In the men’s event, four qualification spots will be determined by the ICC Men’s T20I rankings. These spots are reserved for the highest-ranked eligible teams from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania as of December 31, 2026. India, currently the top-ranked men’s T20I side and reigning world champion, is in a strong position for qualification. Pakistan, the next highest-ranked Asian team, is currently ranked sixth.

The United States, as the host nation, is eligible for automatic qualification in both the men’s and women’s competitions. This is contingent on the US meeting the requirement of being ranked among the top 15 ICC T20I teams at any point between June 30, 2026, and December 31, 2026.

Final spots and West Indies’ unique situation

The sixth and final spot in both the men’s and women’s competitions will be decided through the ICC Olympics Qualifier 2027. This tournament will feature eight teams in each event, providing a pathway for additional nations to compete for an Olympic berth. The qualifiers will be held separately for both genders, with dates yet to be finalised.

The West Indies is ineligible to participate in the Olympic Games as a single entity because it represents multiple Caribbean nations and is not recognised as an IOC National Olympic Committee (NOC). However, if the West Indies men’s or women’s teams are among the eight highest-ranked non-qualified sides by December 31, 2026, a dedicated Caribbean qualifier will be conducted. This regional tournament would determine which specific nation will represent the region in the ICC Olympics Qualifier.

The West Indies is composed of NOCs from various nations including Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the US Virgin Islands. These nations do not compete individually in ICC events. All cricket matches at Los Angeles 2028 are planned to be played at a purpose-built cricket venue in Pomona, located in Los Angeles County.

The qualification criteria for women’s cricket at the Olympics hinges on their performance in the T20 World Cup, with Australia, South Africa, and England having already secured early slots by qualifying for the semifinals. The Indian women’s cricket team has secured a place, while the men’s side is in a strong position to make the cut based on their current ranking. The cut-off date for men’s qualification based on rankings is December 31, 2026.

The ICC stated that these continental quota places for men will be allocated to the highest-ranked eligible NOCs from different continents, resulting in four teams in total. For women, four quota places will be allocated to the highest-placed eligible NOCs taken continentally at the T20 World Cup, meaning the top standing NOC from different continents at the conclusion of the competition will secure a spot. Each eligible team will obtain one quota place for its NOC.

The Final Olympic Global Qualification Tournament (FOGQT) will serve as the pathway for the remaining slots. In this tournament, the next eight highest-ranked eligible teams, which have not yet qualified based on rankings, will compete for one slot each in the men’s and women’s competitions. No maximum limit on continental representation applies to the final qualifier.

The ICC announced the qualification criteria on June 29, 2026.
