Sooryavanshi’s omission sparks debate
The decision to keep Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on the bench throughout India‘s recent series against Ireland has ignited considerable discussion among former cricketers. While some former players, including Sunil Gavaskar and Mohammed Kaif, have advocated for his inclusion, others like R Ashwin have supported the team management’s approach. This debate now extends to India‘s upcoming tour of England.
Many view the situation as a missed opportunity for the young talent. Historically, matches against lower-ranked teams have served as a platform to introduce new players to international cricket in a less pressured environment. However, following India‘s loss in the first T20I against Ireland, the team management reportedly opted for continuity, choosing to back established players.
This approach has led to questions regarding consistency, especially given that Suryakumar Yadav, a T20 World Cup-winning captain, was not part of the squad. The selection committee and the team management, led by Gautam Gambhir, have faced criticism for what some perceive as inconsistent decision-making.
Calls for immediate inclusion
Sunil Gavaskar has been a vocal proponent of Sooryavanshi‘s inclusion, suggesting that form should have been the primary criterion for selection. He believes the series against Ireland presented an ideal chance to introduce the young batter. Gavaskar stated that Sooryavanshi could have played in both matches against Ireland, possibly opening with Abhishek Sharma in one game and having Sanju Samson open in another.
Gavaskar has also emphasized that Sooryavanshi should be included in the playing XI from the first match of the England series. He suggested that out-of-form batters should be benched to make way for Sooryavanshi, who could bat as an opener or at number three. He believes that playing Sooryavanshi could potentially surprise England.
Echoing similar sentiments, former India batter Mohammed Kaif criticized the selection logic, highlighting the perceived inconsistency. He pointed out that while the team management cited the desire to maintain a World Cup-winning core, previous captains like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav were replaced for the sake of introducing younger players. Kaif argued that if the focus is on youth, then Sooryavanshi, who performed well in the IPL, should have been considered.
Former Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary also expressed his disappointment, suggesting that the coaching staff might be adhering to pre-conceived notions rather than acknowledging current form. He questioned why Sooryavanshi, who was in good form, was overlooked in favor of players who performed well in a previous T20 World Cup.
Alternative viewpoints on selection
In contrast to these views, former India spinner R Ashwin offered a different perspective. He argued that there is currently no immediate spot for Sooryavanshi in the playing XI. Ashwin explained that players like Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, who do not participate in Test or ODI cricket, rely on the T20 format to maintain their relevance within the team structure.
Ashwin suggested that if a place needs to be made for Sooryavanshi, it should be during tours like the one to Zimbabwe, where the incumbent openers might not be present. He maintained that it would be unfair to drop the current openers, and that Sooryavanshi‘s inclusion should ideally come as a result of an incumbent player’s loss of form or an injury.
The situation highlights a tension within India‘s selection strategy. The series against Ireland was seen by some as an ideal, low-stakes opportunity to debut a young talent. However, that opportunity was not utilized. The upcoming series against England, which begins on July 1, is expected to be a more challenging environment.
Sooryavanshi‘s strong performances, including his stint with India A in Sri Lanka where he scored 94 runs off 29 balls in a final, have built a strong case for his international debut. The debate continues as India prepares for the first match against England on July 1.
