France and Spain are set to clash in a highly anticipated World Cup semi-final in Dallas on Tuesday. Didier Deschamps, the France coach, has described the upcoming match as “spectacular,” anticipating a high-quality encounter between the two European giants.
This fixture marks another significant meeting between the two nations. Spain previously defeated France in the semi-finals of Euro 2024, a tournament they went on to win. They also secured a victory against Les Bleus in a Nations League last-four match last year. Despite these past results, Deschamps stated, “The past is in the past. They [Spain] did win in the past but I am looking forward to tomorrow. We are now at another level. We want to be in the final.” Deschamps is scheduled to step down after the tournament, concluding 14 years in charge.
Road to the Semi-Final
France, two-time world champions, are aiming to become only the third country to reach three consecutive World Cup finals. This feat has only been achieved by West Germany (in 1982, 1986, and 1990) and Brazil (in 1994, 1998, and 2002). Deschamps, who captained France to a world title in 1998 and managed them to victory in 2018, saw his team lose to Argentina on penalties in the 2022 final in Qatar.
Deschamps suggested that Spain would start the semi-final as favourites, noting their defensive strength: “They have only conceded only one goal in six games.” He added, “We know this could be a most spectacular game. [Spain boss] Luis [de la Fuente] and myself we know how to defend and with the quality of two teams offensively, we can think it’s going to be a spectacular game.”
De la Fuente, however, downplayed the favourite tag, stating, “It doesn’t mean anything. We are two great national teams facing one another. Whether we are favourites or not doesn’t mean further pressure for us. We have that pressure anyway because we want to do well for our country.”
France has demonstrated significant attacking prowess in the tournament, scoring 16 times in six games. Kylian Mbappe has been a key contributor, scoring eight goals and providing three assists. If Mbappe scores against Spain, he will surpass Lionel Messi, who also has eight goals, in the race for the Golden Boot.

De la Fuente acknowledged the threat posed by France’s players, including Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, and Michael Olise. He stated, “They have great players but so do we. Of course we will have to think about these players, win our battles, be on the front foot and think about our style. Tomorrow will be an extremely demanding match.”
Key Players to Watch
Several players are expected to play crucial roles in the semi-final. For France, Kylian Mbappe has been in exceptional form, scoring in every knockout round after bagging four goals in the group stages. He also has multiple assists to his name.
Michael Olise, despite not scoring, has provided five assists, making him a significant creative force for France. His partnership with Mbappe has been a highlight of the tournament. Ousmane Dembele has also been prolific, scoring five goals, including a hat-trick in a group stage match and a goal in the quarter-finals.

For Spain, Lamine Yamal, an 18-year-old, is considered a key attacking threat. He scored against France in the Euro 2024 semi-finals and was named player of the match in Spain’s quarter-final victory over Belgium. Yamal has also recorded the most successful dribbles in the tournament so far. He commented, “I know I can contribute even if I don’t score. I know my movements draw in many opponents, so I do everything I can to help the team.”
Mikel Oyarzabal is Spain’s leading scorer in the World Cup with four goals. He also scored an 86th-minute winner against England in the Euro 2024 final, demonstrating his ability to perform in high-pressure situations. Another player to watch is Mikel Merino, who has scored late winners as a substitute against Portugal and Belgium, making him a potential impact player off the bench.
De la Fuente shared a quote from Julius Caesar during his news conference: “Julius Caesar always said that you can’t win without suffering. I agree with that. That is one of the expressions I love. If you want to achieve big things in your life you need to prepare to suffer.” He concluded by encouraging his players to enjoy the privilege of the moment and play to their potential.
The semi-final match is scheduled to kick off at 20:00 BST.
