England has ascended to the top position in the latest ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings following a dominant performance against India. The team secured a 4-0 series victory at home, dethroning India from the number one spot, a position they had held for over 1,600 days since February 2022.
The series culminated in a decisive win in Southampton, where a record-breaking partnership between Harry Brook and Jos Buttler proved instrumental. The duo dismantled India‘s bowling attack, forging a 233-run stand for the second wicket in the fifth T20I. This partnership set a new record for any wicket in the history of T20 Internationals.
Jos Buttler, the opener, scored a century, while captain Harry Brook remained unbeaten with a score of 95. Buttler‘s century, a quickfire 131 off 64 balls, led England‘s batting charge, contributing to a massive total of 257/3 in their 20 overs. Brook‘s explosive 95 not out came from just 45 deliveries. Buttler also achieved his quickest half-century in T20Is during this match.
Ahead of the final T20I, the England skipper had publicly stated the team’s ambition to claim the number one ranking, a goal they successfully achieved with their comprehensive series win.
Dominant Series Performance
The series began with the opening match in Chester-le-Street being affected by rain. However, England went on to dominate the subsequent four games. Their strong performance included handing India their largest defeat in T20Is in Nottingham. Another notable victory saw England chase down a target of 159 runs in just 13.4 overs in Bristol.
In the decisive fifth T20I in Southampton, England posted a formidable total of 257/3. Buttler‘s first 50 runs came off 34 balls, and he accelerated further, reaching his next 50 in just 17 deliveries. Brook, on the other hand, reached his half-century in just 19 balls, showcasing his aggressive batting style. The partnership between Buttler and Brook lasted for 102 balls, yielding 233 runs.
The Indian chase concluded at 201/8 in their 20 overs, despite half-centuries from Ishan Kishan, who scored 56 off 35 balls, and Tilak Varma, who contributed 53 off 25 balls. These individual efforts were not enough to challenge England‘s commanding total.
The Indian bowling attack faced significant pressure throughout the match. Buttler and Brook collectively hit 16 sixes, with eight from each player. Prasidh Krishna managed to remove Phil Salt early, caught at the deep fine leg boundary, but the visitors’ fortunes declined thereafter. Axar Patel conceded 63 runs in his four overs, while Prince Yadav gave away 60 runs in his four overs. Suryansh Shedge, who was brought into the team due to Harshit Rana‘s hamstring injury, conceded 39 runs in three overs.

India’s Recent Struggles
India‘s recent form under the new regime led by Shreyas Iyer has seen them unable to secure a victory since their World Cup win in Ahmedabad in February of this year. This series defeat to Ireland by a margin of 2-0 further contributed to their drop in the rankings.
The loss of the number one ranking marks the end of India‘s considerable tenure at the top of the ICC T20I team rankings. This was also the sixth match out of seven that India lost under captain Shreyas Iyer, prompting a review by the BCCI. The team’s strategy, which had previously been effective on home pitches, proved less successful in the UK tour.
The Indian dressing room is reportedly experiencing divisions and a lack of trust among players, attributed to frequent changes in the squad. This environment has contributed to insecurity within the team. The absence of Harshit Rana for the remainder of the tour, including the ODIs, due to a grade 1 hamstring tear, also impacted the team’s bowling options.
England‘s comprehensive series victory and their ascent to the top of the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings underscore their strong performance in the recent matches.
