The Big Bash League (BBL) is set to make history later this year, with its opening match scheduled to be played in India for the first time. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Friday that the 2026-27 season of Australia’s premier domestic T20 competition will commence in Chennai in December. This marks the first occasion an official BBL match will be played outside of Australia.
The announcement was made during the final day of Prime Minister Albanese’s three-day visit to Australia, alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This move is part of an expanding sporting relationship between the two nations. While India has previously hosted international cricket and the Indian Premier League, no other overseas domestic cricket league has staged an official fixture in the country.
Cricket Australia later confirmed that the season opener will feature the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers. This match is part of a broader initiative to expand the league’s presence in one of the world’s largest cricket markets. The BBL is already broadcast in India through a media rights agreement with JioStar, which extends until 2030.

Alistair Dobson, executive general manager of the Big Bash Leagues, stated that taking the competition overseas aims to introduce the BBL to new audiences. He noted that the popularity of the BBL extends beyond Australia’s shores and that building the game in new markets is crucial for the league’s long-term growth. This includes enhancing the value of media rights, creating opportunities for sponsors to connect with larger audiences, and uncovering new prospects for players and clubs.
Commercial details, such as ticket sales and travel packages for supporters, are still being finalised. Dobson expressed a desire to see BBL fans from across India travel to Chennai for the game, aiming to fill the stadium and create a true BBL experience with significant attendance, vibrant atmosphere, music, and excellent cricket. He believes the event will be historic and will also help strengthen tourism and business links between India and Australia.
The Chennai fixture is planned as a one-off event and has the backing of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which manages the Indian Premier League. Further details, including the full schedule and cultural festival specifics, are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
