The Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia is set to host the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix from October 2-4, 2026. This event will take place between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix, according to announcements from Formula 1 and the FIA.
This arrangement allows Formula 1 to maintain a full calendar of 23 races for the 2026 season, as the Bahrain Grand Prix was initially called off earlier in the season. The decision to move the race to Malaysia was influenced by ongoing regional challenges, with Bahrain aiming to stand as a pillar of stability for Formula 1.
Collaboration and Return to Sepang
The agreement to host the race in Malaysia was a collaborative effort involving Formula 1, the FIA, the Government of Bahrain, and the Government of Malaysia. This partnership highlights the close relations and mutual trust between the two nations.
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed delight at the confirmation, noting the sport’s ability to adapt and find solutions. He thanked His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim of Malaysia, along with their respective governments, for their vision and commitment.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, also praised the collaboration, emphasising the tireless work of the FIA, Formula One Management, and partners in Bahrain. He highlighted Malaysia’s historical importance in Formula 1 and the continued commitment of the Malaysian Government.
The Sepang International Circuit, which debuted as an F1 venue in 1999 and last hosted a race in 2017, is known for its challenging layout, passionate fans, and unpredictable weather. Its return is expected to provide a spectacular setting for racing and an unforgettable experience for fans globally.
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, stated that the event reflects Bahrain’s enduring commitment and passion for the sport. He acknowledged the support from F1, the FIA, Bahrain International Circuit, Sepang International Circuit, and the teams.

Event Details and Future Calendar
The race will officially be known as the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. Bahrain’s national airline, Gulf Air, will serve as the title sponsor. This naming convention is due to Bahrain’s assistance in covering a significant portion of the event’s costs.
While the return of Malaysia to the calendar is largely confirmed, it is still subject to final agreements and official sign-off, including the approval of the World Motor Sport Council. This approval is widely anticipated to be a formality.
The rest of the 2026 Formula 1 schedule remains unchanged. However, there is ongoing uncertainty regarding the final two scheduled races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Formula 1 is developing contingency plans for these events, with a decision expected by September.
Potential alternative tracks being considered if the Qatar and Abu Dhabi races cannot proceed include Imola in Italy, Portimao in Portugal, and Istanbul Park in Turkey. Formula 1 aims to host at least 21 races to avoid activating contractual clauses that could impact rights fees for broadcasters and sponsorship budgets for teams.
