Switzerland defeats Algeria 2-0 to advance to World Cup Round of 16

FIFA WC 2026: Embolo, Ndoye help Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 to enter RO16

Switzerland secured their spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after a 2-0 victory against Algeria. The match saw decisive goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye, marking a disciplined performance by the Swiss side in a group stage encounter.

The game, held in Vancouver, saw Switzerland maintain control for a significant portion of the contest. Their next challenge will be against either Colombia or Ghana for a place in the quarter-finals.

Swiss secure early lead and control

Switzerland made a strong start to the match, particularly after enduring an initial period of pressure from Algeria. The Algerian team showed sharp attacking intent in the opening minutes, but the Swiss defence remained firm.

The turning point came when Johan Manzambi played a crucial role in a quick counter-attack. Manzambi, who has emerged as a key creative force for Switzerland, raced down the right flank before delivering a precise cross into the box. Breel Embolo was well-positioned to convert the opportunity from close range, giving Switzerland a crucial lead. This goal, Embolo’s 26th international strike, shifted the momentum firmly in favour of the Swiss, who then began to dictate the tempo of the game.

Manzambi, a 20-year-old midfielder, has been a standout performer for Switzerland. Initially coming off the bench, his impressive displays, including in a 2-1 win against Canada, earned him a starting role. His growing influence has brought fresh energy to the Swiss attack.

Ndoye seals victory in second half

Switzerland further extended their advantage shortly after the restart. Dan Ndoye produced a powerful finish from the top of the penalty area, striking the ball less than a minute into the second half. His shot left Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane with no chance, despite a full-length dive.

This early second-half goal proved decisive, effectively diminishing Algeria’s hopes of a comeback. Switzerland efficiently managed the remainder of the game, maintaining defensive discipline while continuing to seek additional scoring opportunities. Fabian Rieder nearly added another goal in the 81st minute, but his effort narrowly missed the target.

The victory is particularly significant for Switzerland, as it marks another appearance in the World Cup Round of 16. While they have consistently qualified for the knockout stages in recent tournaments, their last win in a knockout-round match was in 1938 in France. The current campaign presents a renewed opportunity for the team to progress further.

Algeria’s campaign concludes

Algeria’s World Cup journey concluded with this defeat, despite moments of quality shown throughout the tournament. This marked their first return to the World Cup since 2014, when they reached the knockout stage. In this edition, Algeria advanced as a third-place finisher following a dramatic 3-3 draw against Austria, a result that also helped Austria progress and eliminated Iran from the competition. Captain Riyad Mahrez, aged 35, played a key role in their campaign, scoring twice in that high-scoring draw. However, against Switzerland, Algeria struggled to maintain consistency after a bright start.

Under coach Murat Yakin, Switzerland will now focus on their upcoming Round of 16 match against either Colombia or Ghana, scheduled to take place in Vancouver next Tuesday.
