India secured the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe with a substantial 90-run victory in the second match at Harare Sports Club on Saturday. This win gives India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, following their seven-wicket win in the opening match.
The victory also marked a significant milestone for captain Shreyas Iyer, who clinched his first series win leading the T20I squad. Previously, India had lost two consecutive T20I series under his captaincy against Ireland and England.
India’s Batting Performance
After being asked to bat first, India posted a formidable total of 219 for 5. The innings saw crucial half-centuries from Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma, who were instrumental in setting a challenging target for Zimbabwe.
Ishan Kishan scored 81 runs from 44 balls. He reached his fifty in 31 deliveries and then accelerated, adding 31 more runs in just 13 balls. Much of his scoring was concentrated on the leg side, where he frequently found the boundary. He hit Brian Bennett for two fours through the mid-wicket region and later struck pacer Brad Evans for two fours and a six in the same area.
Tilak Varma remained unbeaten with 60 runs off 29 balls. He reached his fifty in only 23 deliveries and aggressively targeted Zimbabwe’s leading pacer, Blessing Muzarabani, with three consecutive boundaries. One of these boundaries came from a late dab behind point, utilising the bowler’s pace, and he also hit Evans for a six over mid-wicket.
The partnership between Kishan and Varma was particularly impactful, as they put on 94 runs off 44 balls for the fourth wicket. This stand helped India recover after losing both openers cheaply. Earlier, Kishan had also contributed to a 66-run partnership for the third wicket with captain Shreyas Iyer, who scored 25. India managed to score 61 runs in the final five overs of their innings.
Zimbabwe’s Chase and Indian Bowling
Chasing a record target of 220, Zimbabwe’s task became increasingly difficult as they lost five wickets within the first nine overs. They were eventually bowled out for 129 runs in 17.5 overs. Despite some early hope provided by opener Brian Bennett, Zimbabwe struggled to build significant partnerships.
Brian Bennett provided an aggressive start for Zimbabwe, scoring 32 runs off 19 balls, which included three fours and three sixes. He took on debutant Yash Thakur, hitting him for a six and a four in succession. However, Thakur responded quickly, dismissing Bennett when his attempted ramp shot was caught by wicketkeeper Kishan. Thakur finished with figures of 2 for 30 on his T20I international debut.
Following Bennett’s dismissal, Zimbabwe experienced a steady fall of wickets. The Indian bowlers maintained discipline, consistently picking up wickets. Slow left-arm bowler Abhishek Sharma delivered the best bowling figures for India, taking 3 wickets for 17 runs. Part-time spinner Tilak Varma also contributed with a wicket. Ryan Burl and Tadi Marumani made scores in the 20s, but these contributions were not enough to put pressure on India.
During the match, India faced an injury concern when pacer Prince Yadav left the field holding his hamstring after bowling 1.2 overs. He finished with figures of 2 for 10. The final match of the series is scheduled for Sunday.
