Seattle hosts Egypt and Iran in World Cup group stage match

Egypt v Iran: World Cup 2026 – live

Egypt and Iran faced each other in a World Cup 2026 group stage match held in Seattle. The game concluded with late drama, as Iran initially believed they had secured progress, only for a goal to be disallowed by VAR. This match was part of the final group stage fixtures, determining which teams would advance to the knockout rounds.

During the match, Iran’s Khalilzadeh received a booking for removing his shirt during a goal celebration. Earlier in the game, Lasheen of Egypt was also booked for a professional foul to stop an Iran counter-attack. The match saw a total of four yellow cards, with two for each team, indicating a full-blooded contest.

In the 90+6th minute, a free-kick for Iran led to a chaotic moment in the box. After Shobeir fumbled the ball, a blocked snapshot rebounded to Khalilzadeh, who scored. However, this goal was subsequently disallowed after a VAR review, denying Iran what they thought was a decisive moment.

Before the late VAR incident, Iran had another close call in the 89th minute when a corner kick resulted in Taremi flicking a header onto the bar. The whistle had already blown for a foul on the goalkeeper, meaning the goal would not have counted regardless.

The second half of the match saw a lack of rhythm, which was attributed to the ongoing confusion regarding the group table standings. Both teams appeared to be assessing their positions as the game progressed. At one point, Egypt was set to finish second in the group, while Iran was in third, a position that would likely still see them through to the knockouts.

Egypt maintained control of possession for significant periods, working their attacks subtly, particularly down the left flank. Zizo had an effort deflected wide, and a subsequent corner was claimed by Beiranvand. Iran, on the other hand, often resorted to long balls, with Taremi becoming increasingly isolated upfront.

Earlier in the second half, Mohamed Salah was observed receiving ice for his left hamstring in the dugout. Despite this, Salah remained influential when on the field, with one of his cutbacks leading to Trezeguet having a clear sight of goal, only for an Iranian defender to deflect the ball. Salah’s subsequent corner also created a dangerous situation in the six-yard box.

Iran showed intent at the start of the second half, with Ghoddos delivering a cross that Ezatolahi did not gamble for. Later, Ezatolahi had a shot from distance that went over the bar. Despite these efforts, Iran’s manager Amir Ghalenoei appeared relatively passive on the touchline, while Egypt’s coach Hossam Hassan displayed nervous energy.

Coaches’ Remarks and Travel Challenges

Ahead of the match, Egypt’s head coach Hossam Hassan expressed his support for the Iranian team, stating that all teams at the FIFA World Cup deserve equal treatment. He emphasised that FIFA seeks respect and fair play, and that all teams have a right to be at the World Cup. Hassan conveyed his respect for the Iranian team during a news conference in Seattle.

Iran’s manager Amir Ghalenoei reiterated concerns about travel policies affecting his squad’s fitness and preparations. Iranian players and staff were previously restricted in their entry to the US, only being allowed in one day before matches and required to leave almost immediately after. However, these restrictions were loosened for the Egypt match, allowing Team Melli to arrive two days earlier in Seattle.

Ghalenoei highlighted that arriving two days before the match was a right that his team should have had for their previous games. Both coaches expressed mutual respect for each other’s teams. Ghalenoei noted that Egypt is a highly organised team with many skilled players beyond Mohamed Salah.

Egypt entered the match at the top of their group with four points, meaning a draw would be sufficient for them to qualify. Iran was in second place with two points, tied with Belgium, while New Zealand had one point. Hassan stated his intention to pursue victory regardless of the qualification calculations.

Egypt had previously secured their first-ever World Cup victory with a 3-1 win against New Zealand. This victory sparked celebrations among Egyptian fans, and Hassan expressed his desire to continue bringing joy to them.

Pride Match Designation

The match between Egypt and Iran in Seattle was designated as a Pride Match, an event aimed at celebrating diversity and the LGBTQ+ community. This designation occurred despite complaints from the Iranian and Egyptian football federations, given that homosexuality is illegal in both countries.

Officials from the Seattle host committee clarified that Pride Weekend had been planned before the draw paired the two countries for the match. They suggested that discomfort should be met with curiosity rather than retreat. Fans outside the stadium reportedly described the atmosphere as great.

The game’s outcome was also influenced by events in another group match, where Belgium scored to make it 4-1, returning the Red Devils to first place in their group after Egypt had briefly topped it. This result meant that Egypt would definitely qualify in second place, while Iran would finish third, which was still expected to be enough for them to reach the knockouts.

The match concluded with Egypt set to face Australia in Dallas in the round of 32.
