Dublin: Ireland names ODI squad for Afghanistan series, features new faces in Sports

Cricket Ireland has announced the Ireland Men’s squad for the initial three matches of the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) series against Afghanistan. The five-match series is scheduled to take place at Bready and Stormont, commencing on August 5, 2026. This series marks the first assignment for newly appointed Head Coach Gary Wilson.

The squad sees the return of captain Paul Stirling, who missed the recent T20I series against India due to injury. However, the team continues to face challenges with several players unavailable for selection due to injury or ongoing return-to-play protocols. These players include Josh Little, Matt Hollard, Craig Young, Barry McCarthy, Jordan Neill, and David Delany.

The selection committee has opted to name the squad only for the first three ODIs, with the roster for the final two matches to be determined after assessing the fitness of the injured players. This approach allows for flexibility based on player recovery.

New Additions to the Squad

The squad features several new faces, with Jai Moondra, Ben Calitz, and Byron McDonough receiving their maiden ODI call-ups. Jai Moondra, who made his T20I debut against India, impressed during Ireland’s historic T20I series triumph over the reigning world champions. National Selector Andrew White highlighted Moondra’s potential, stating that he brings attributes that can significantly impact the series.

Byron McDonough, a 24-year-old pace bowler, earns his first call-up to the national side after strong performances in the recently concluded Inter-Provincial 50-over Cup. He played a key role in helping Leinster Lightning secure the title. White noted McDonough’s abilities, suggesting he can contribute effectively to the team’s performance.

Ben Calitz also receives his first ODI squad call-up. Both Moondra and Calitz are uncapped in ODI cricket but have experience in T20I cricket. White praised Calitz’s powerful and dynamic batting approach, which he believes provides valuable options in the middle to lower order and can change the momentum of a game.

Another player mentioned for his potential impact is Gavin Hoey, who is expected to provide a genuine wicket-taking threat through the middle overs with his ability to spin the ball both ways and create pressure on opposition batters.

Coaching Unit and Series Expectations

This series marks the first time Gary Wilson will lead the coaching unit as Head Coach. Wilson expressed his anticipation for the series, noting that these are Ireland’s first ODIs in 15 months. He highlighted the increased competition for selection, indicating a strong pool of players.

Wilson also acknowledged the rivalry that has developed between Ireland and Afghanistan over the years, expecting it to continue in this series. He emphasised the team’s desire to play dynamically, adapt to conditions, and actively seek opportunities to pressure the opposition. His philosophy for the team includes consistently looking for wickets with the ball and being known for a “never say die attitude” in the field.

Andrew White also shared his excitement for the team’s return to the field following their victories over India in June. He views this five-game series as a significant opportunity for the squad to test themselves against world-class opposition and build on their recent momentum.
