India has returned to the top position in the ICC Men’s T20I Team rankings following their recent success against Zimbabwe in Harare. The team secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, leading to their re-ascension to the number one spot. This achievement sees the current ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions reclaim the top ranking from England, who had previously taken the lead after a 4-0 T20I series win at home.
The Indian batting lineup played a crucial role in the second T20I against Zimbabwe. This followed a dominant victory in the first match, which was largely driven by the bowlers and a significant innings from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. In the second T20I, after losing two early wickets, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer formed a 66-run partnership. Following this, Tilak Varma contributed a notable knock, scoring 60 runs off 29 balls.
Kishan was the highest scorer in the second game, making 81 runs off 44 balls. Speaking to reporters after the match, he commented on the team’s approach. He stated that as a batter at number three, his role was to focus on the ball and play his natural game, especially after the loss of two early wickets. Kishan also mentioned the importance of understanding the wicket conditions, noting discussions about whether to aim for scores like 250 or 230, or if the pitch was more suited for 170-180 runs.
He further elaborated on the partnership with Shreyas Iyer, explaining that their goal was to build a strong partnership and extend the innings. Kishan felt that their plans were executed effectively. In response to India’s challenging target of 220, Zimbabwe, also known as the Chevrons, lost five wickets within the first nine overs. They were eventually bowled out for 129 runs, allowing India to secure an unassailable lead in the T20I series.
Sooryavanshi’s Record-Breaking Performance
In the third and final T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continued to set new records. The 15-year-old left-handed opener became the first player in men’s international cricket to achieve multiple scores of 50 or more before turning 16. During this match on Sunday, he scored 81 runs off 48 balls, helping India reach a total of 192/5 after they chose to bat first.
Previously, only Nepal’s Kushal Malla had recorded a 50-plus score in men’s internationals before reaching the age of 16. Sooryavanshi’s two such scores now surpass this previous record. His performance on a pitch that offered assistance to bowlers showcased a different aspect of his batting style. He started cautiously, accumulating 11 runs from his first 10 balls and 26 from his first 20 deliveries, before reaching his second T20I fifty in 31 balls.
Despite the cautious start, Sooryavanshi’s innings featured his characteristic strokeplay. He executed a drive off a yorker from Brad Evans for a boundary straight down the ground. Later, he hit a 102-meter six off off-spinner Sikandar Raza and also reverse-swept Wesley Madhevere for another boundary. While Sooryavanshi settled into his innings, his opening partner, Abhishek Sharma, continued a period of low scores.
Abhishek Sharma edged a delivery from Blessing Muzarabani to wicketkeeper Tadi Marumani, scoring two runs. This extended his sequence of low scores, with his last six innings yielding 10, 16, 3, 1, 8, and 2 runs, dating back to the third T20I against England in Nottingham last month. Sooryavanshi then formed a 75-run partnership for the second wicket with Ishan Kishan, who contributed 29 runs. He followed this with a 50-run partnership alongside captain Shreyas Iyer, who scored 27.
Sooryavanshi appeared to be heading towards a century before Wesley Madhevere dismissed him. Brad Evans completed the catch at long-off, ending Sooryavanshi’s innings at 81 runs. After the departures of Sooryavanshi and Shreyas, India was unable to maintain the same scoring rate. The middle order added only 47 runs in the final five overs. Rinku Singh’s contribution of 25 runs off 14 balls helped India get closer to the 200-run mark, finishing their innings on 192/5, a total considered competitive on a bowler-friendly surface.
The two teams are scheduled to play again on July 26, Sunday.
