Arsenal strengthens midfield with Guimaraes
Arsenal has reportedly agreed a £75m fee with Newcastle for their captain, Bruno Guimaraes. The midfielder has been granted permission to travel for a medical examination. This move follows Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s stated ambition to build on the club’s recent success, which included winning the Premier League title for the first time in 22 years last season and reaching the Champions League final.
Guimaraes had reportedly informed Newcastle earlier this summer of his desire to join Arsenal if a suitable offer was presented. Although Arsenal’s initial bid was rejected, the 28-year-old Brazilian now appears set to join the Premier League champions. He joined Newcastle in 2022 from Lyon for £40m and has since made 195 appearances for the club, scoring 31 goals.
Newcastle had aimed to retain Guimaraes, who has two years remaining on his contract, along with a club-held option for a third. However, if the deal proceeds as anticipated, Newcastle could generate over £240m from player sales this summer. Other significant departures from St James’ Park include Anthony Gordon, who moved to Barcelona in a £69.3m deal, and Sandro Tonali, who signed with Spurs for £100m. Manager Eddie Howe also departed, contributing to what has been a turbulent summer for the club.

Guimaraes has missed only 16 Premier League games since joining Newcastle in 2022. His impact on Newcastle’s performance is evident in their statistics; their win percentage, points per game, average goals scored, and average goals conceded all reportedly suffer when he is not available. Opta data indicates that Newcastle’s win percentage (50.7%), points per game (1.7), average goals for (1.9), and average goals against (1.3) are significantly higher when Guimaraes features.
Last season, Guimaraes was Newcastle’s top scorer in the league with nine goals and provided four assists for Brazil at the World Cup in his five starts. Despite missing six games due to a hamstring injury late last season, he ranked among the top five players in the league for defensive line-breaking passes (46) and through balls (21). He also led Newcastle in passes under high-intensity pressure (998), highlighting his willingness to take on responsibility.
Leadership and depth for Arsenal’s midfield
Guimaraes is expected to bring natural leadership qualities to Arsenal. He became a key figure at Newcastle during his tenure at St James’ Park, and Arteta aims to leverage his ability and connection with supporters. The addition of Guimaraes will enhance Arsenal’s leadership group, which currently supports club captain Martin Odegaard.
The move also addresses concerns about squad depth and player workload. Last season, Arsenal played 63 games across all competitions, leading to a revamp of their medical department. The heavy demands on players like Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice were apparent, with Rice reportedly carrying a hamstring issue after playing the most minutes of any outfield player at Arsenal and helping England reach the World Cup semi-finals. Guimaraes’ arrival is intended to ensure consistent quality even if Arteta rotates his starting lineup, while also elevating the overall standard of the midfield.
Guimaraes is set to join a midfield that includes Rice, Zubimendi, Odegaard, Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Ethan Nwaneri.
