The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has taken a firm stand against alarming viral WhatsApp messages that have been circulating, claiming that temperatures in Kerala will soar between 45°C and 55°C starting from late April. These messages, which have caused widespread concern among residents, included various safety precautions, such as avoiding outdoor activities and not filling fuel tanks completely.

In a clear response to the misinformation, the KSDMA emphasized that no such warnings have been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) or any Kerala authorities regarding temperatures reaching 55°C. “No such warnings have been issued by the IMD or Kerala authorities,” a KSDMA spokesperson stated, reassuring the public of the absence of any extreme weather alerts.

Furthermore, the KSDMA highlighted that spreading misinformation about heatwave warnings is a punishable offense under the Disaster Management Act. “Spreading misinformation is a punishable offense under the Disaster Management Act,” the spokesperson added, underscoring the seriousness of the issue.

In addition to the heatwave claims, the viral messages also included scientifically baseless assertions about phone explosions and fuel tanks. The KSDMA firmly dismissed these claims, stating, “The claims about phone explosions and fuel tanks are scientifically baseless.” This clarification aims to alleviate fears that have been unnecessarily heightened by the false information.

As temperatures are expected to rise significantly, the KSDMA has issued official guidance for the public regarding heat safety measures. Citizens are advised to rely solely on official websites and verified social media pages for accurate weather updates and safety information.

With the temperature increase projected to start on April 29 and last until May 12, residents are encouraged to take necessary precautions, especially during the peak hours of 11 AM to 3 PM when direct sunlight should be avoided.

As the situation develops, officials continue to monitor the weather closely and provide updates as necessary. Observers are keenly watching how the public responds to the KSDMA’s guidance and the measures being implemented to ensure safety during this period of rising temperatures.
