The recent update from West Bengal’s Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding the voter list has significant implications for the upcoming elections. A total of 27 lakh pending voter records have been settled, with approximately 2 lakh names processed daily. This rapid progress is crucial as the state prepares for its municipal elections.

As part of the Special Identification and Registration (SIR) process, the ECI has published the first supplementary voter list, which was uploaded on their official websites late last night. This move comes after a thorough judicial review of the electoral roll, where 29 lakh adjudications have been completed out of 60 lakh cases under scrutiny.

Voters in West Bengal now have the opportunity to appeal any discrepancies they find in the voter list. They can do so online via the ECI Net app or offline at district and sub-divisional offices. To facilitate this process, 19 appeal tribunals have been established across 23 districts for those whose names have been excluded from the supplementary list.

In Surat, the voter list for the upcoming municipal elections has also been made accessible to the public at 40 locations, with the complete list displayed at the Surat Municipal Corporation headquarters. Voters are encouraged to check their details and submit applications for any corrections at the election and census department.

The total number of voters in West Bengal, according to the final electoral roll published on February 28, stands at 7,04,59,284. This figure reflects a decrease from the earlier draft roll, which had included 7,08,16,630 names, with 58,20,899 names deleted during the enumeration phase.

In a related development, the ECI has taken strict measures by removing 73 Returning Officers, primarily Sub-Divisional Officers (SDOs), to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

The SIR exercise was initially announced on October 27 of the previous year, when the electorate was recorded at 7,66,37,529. The ongoing efforts to streamline the voter registration process are vital for maintaining public trust in the electoral system.

As the situation evolves, further updates are anticipated, particularly regarding the finalization of the voter list and the outcomes of the appeals lodged by voters. Details remain unconfirmed.
