The recent protests in Noida, India, have taken a violent turn as factory workers expressed their frustration over low wages. The unrest intensified in Phase 2 of Noida, where workers rallied for better pay, particularly after Haryana raised its monthly minimum wage from ₹14,000 to ₹19,000. In stark contrast, the minimum wage in Uttar Pradesh remains stagnant at around ₹13,000, igniting anger among the workforce.

During the protest, several vehicles were vandalised, and at least one was set ablaze, highlighting the escalating tensions. Reports of stone pelting emerged, causing significant damage to property in the area. In response to the chaos, a heavy police force was deployed to restore order and ensure the safety of both the workers and the surrounding community.

District Magistrate Medha Rupam addressed the situation, urging workers to continue their duties peacefully and to refrain from believing in rumors or misleading information. She emphasized the administration’s commitment to addressing the grievances of the workers, stating, “The administration has directed all factories to strictly follow labour welfare guidelines.”

In an effort to quell the unrest, the district administration announced a series of measures aimed at improving worker conditions. Factories have been instructed to ensure a weekly day off for every worker and to provide double pay for overtime. Additionally, workers can expect their annual bonuses to be disbursed before November 30, a move aimed at alleviating some of the financial strain they face.

To further support the workforce, a 24×7 control room has been established, providing immediate assistance to workers in need. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance worker welfare and address complaints effectively. Furthermore, the administration has announced the formation of Internal Complaints Committees in all workplaces to prevent sexual harassment, aiming to create a safer environment for all employees.

As the situation develops, observers are closely monitoring the effectiveness of these measures. The hope is that they will not only calm the current unrest but also lead to long-term improvements in worker conditions in Noida and beyond. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether these administrative actions can restore peace and trust among the factory workers.
