On April 12, Asia experienced a severe disruption in air travel, resulting in a staggering 445 flight cancellations and 3,839 delays across major international hubs. The chaos unfolded during peak travel hours, from 08:00 to 22:00, leaving over 200,000 passengers stranded or facing extended layovers.

China Eastern Airlines emerged as the most affected carrier, grappling with significant cancellations that rippled through its network. Meanwhile, Batik Air faced operational challenges at Jakarta, struggling to manage high-utilization schedules amidst the turmoil. SpiceJet, another major player, reported widespread cancellations that severely impacted connections throughout the Indian subcontinent.

At Tokyo’s congested terminals, ANA Wings absorbed a considerable number of delays, contributing to the overall chaos. Passengers reported frustration as they navigated the complexities of rebooking and extended wait times, with the average delay duration exceeding 180 minutes. Some unfortunate travelers even faced delays stretching beyond eight hours, exacerbating the already tense situation.

The disruptions were not merely a result of operational mishaps; they were compounded by geopolitical tensions and airspace constraints that have plagued the region. Middle Eastern airspace restrictions have forced European-Asia routes into extended detours, draining aircraft availability and crew rotations. This cumulative operational stress has been further intensified by elevated fuel costs and ongoing crew shortages.

As the day progressed, hotel accommodations near major Asian hubs quickly sold out, leaving many passengers scrambling for a place to stay. Airlines estimated that it would take between 48 to 72 hours to clear the backlog of passengers and aircraft, a daunting task given the scale of the disruptions.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the recovery trajectory of the airline network, as observers warn that such disruptions could recur weekly until structural conditions improve. The situation remains fluid, and travelers are advised to stay updated on their flight statuses and potential rebooking options.

As the dust settles on this chaotic day in air travel, the repercussions are likely to be felt for some time, with airlines and passengers alike grappling with the fallout from this unprecedented disruption. The hope is that lessons learned will pave the way for more resilient operations in the future.

An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Manchester returned to Delhi after being airborne for nearly eight hours due to airspace complications in Eritrea.

The flight, operating under flight number 6E 033, took off from Delhi at 12:30 a.m. and landed back in Delhi at 2:30 p.m., resulting in a total journey time of 14 hours, including the return.

Reason for Return

The return was necessitated by confusion at air traffic control in Eritrea regarding a permit filed by IndiGo. The flight faced approval issues from Eritrean authorities after a risk assessment, which led to the decision to turn back.

IndiGo stated, “Our flight 6E 033 operating from Delhi to Manchester had to return to its origin due to last-minute airspace restrictions, owing to the ongoing situation in West Asia.” The airline is currently working with relevant authorities to explore the possibilities of resuming the journey.

Other Affected Flights

In addition to the Delhi-Manchester flight, IndiGo’s London-Mumbai flight was also diverted to Cairo for similar reasons. The airline had partially resumed flights to Europe on March 8, 2026, after more than a week of grounding due to airspace restrictions following airstrikes between U.S.-Israel and Iran.

Aircraft Information

The aircraft used for the flight was a Boeing 787-9 leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the next steps for the affected flights, but a scheduled departure for the diverted flight is set for March 10.
