In August 2024, the National Medical Commission (NMC) launched the National Medical Register (NMR), aiming to create a centralized database of licensed allopathic doctors in India. This initiative is part of the NMC’s broader efforts to enhance medical oversight and ensure compliance with educational standards.
However, the initial response to the NMR has been underwhelming, with only 10,411 applications received in the first eight months, and a staggering 98% of these applications not approved. Dr. K.V. Babu, one of the early applicants, expressed frustration over the registration process, stating, “I was probably the first person to apply for NMR registration in the country… but it did not happen. I am still not registered.” This highlights ongoing challenges within the NMC’s operational framework.
In addition to the NMR, the NMC is actively working on the rollout of the National Exit Test (NExT), which is intended to standardize the exit examination for medical graduates. Dr. Abhijat Sheth noted that the technical framework for the NExT has been largely developed, and the next phase will involve broader consultations to ensure its smooth implementation.
On the mental health front, the NMC has issued a mandatory advisory for medical colleges to report student suicides and strengthen mental health support systems. This directive follows a Supreme Court order on April 24, 2023, which emphasized the need for institutions to address mental health concerns and prevent suicides on campuses.
The NMC has set a deadline of four months for medical colleges to fill all vacant teaching and non-teaching posts, as staffing gaps have been a persistent issue. Non-compliance with these directives could lead to regulatory action, as warned by the NMC.
Furthermore, the NMC has clarified that online medical education for foreign students must be complemented with physical onsite training, ensuring that graduates meet the necessary standards for practice in India. This is part of a broader initiative to maintain high educational standards across the medical field.
