In a significant development for higher education in Uttarakhand, Kumaun University announced on March 24, 2026, the appointment of Nandan Singh Bisht as the new deputy controller of examinations. The newly established evaluation system operates on a rigorous 100-point scale, where faculty members are now under scrutiny like never before. Teachers scoring below 60 percent will face severe repercussions, including withheld salary increases and potential compulsory retirement. In contrast, those who excel, achieving scores above 75 percent, will be rewarded with a certificate of appreciation, recognizing their commitment to academic excellence. Furthermore, each faculty member is now required to present at least one paper at a national or international conference, a move that underscores the university’s emphasis on research and professional development.

The university has also tightened the criteria for higher research degrees such as D Sc. and DLitt, requiring a minimum of 12 years of experience. This change reflects a broader trend within academia to elevate the standards of research and scholarship.

During the recent meeting, the university administration also approved the promotion of seven teachers under the Career Advancement Scheme, a decision that aligns with the institution’s goals of fostering a culture of meritocracy and professional growth.

Diwan Singh Rawat, a key figure in the decision-making process, stated, “These decisions taken as a whole, represent an important initiative toward strengthening academic excellence, research quality, transparency and accountability at the university.” His remarks highlight the administration’s commitment to improving the educational landscape at Kumaun University.
