Complaint Filed Against Hardik Pandya

“I believe it is an insult to the national flag,” stated advocate Wajid Khan Bidkar, who has filed a formal complaint against Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya. The complaint alleges that Pandya disrespected the national flag during celebrations following India’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The incident reportedly occurred after India triumphed over New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium, marking India’s third T20 World Cup title. Videos of Pandya’s celebrations circulated widely on social media, showing him dancing and lying down with the national flag wrapped around him.

Bidkar emphasized the significance of the national flag, asserting, “According to Section 2 of the 1971 National Flag Act, we should respect the dignity of the national flag.” He further noted, “The national flag is a symbol of the entire nation, and we can file a complaint here.” The complaint was lodged at the Shivaji Nagar police station in Ahmedabad.

The complainant argues that Pandya’s actions violate the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, which aims to protect the dignity of the national flag. The police have confirmed receipt of the application but have not disclosed any details regarding potential actions that may follow.

India’s recent victory in the T20 World Cup is historic, as it marks the first time the tournament has been won on home soil and the first instance of consecutive titles. The previous victories occurred in 2007 and 2024.

As the situation unfolds, Bidkar stated, “Let’s see what happens next. I have filed the complaint.” The legal implications of this complaint could have broader ramifications for public figures and their conduct regarding national symbols.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any immediate response from Pandya or his representatives concerning the allegations. The incident has sparked discussions about the responsibilities of athletes in representing national symbols, especially during celebratory moments.
